Walking with Wings

The Hummingbird holds a special place in our shamanic world, serving as a link between the physical worldly plane and the higher spiritual plane.

Greatness is not based upon our size, but on our presence. Be here, in the moment, and experience the lightness of being as you walk with wings.

What a Beautiful Day

Today my walk took a little turn.  The parking was full on the north lot, where I usually park, so I took the dogs down the trail on the south side.   It was along this trail that I first heard the land cry out for help.

The neighboring land houses an old landfill.  Landfills, while serving a purpose, encapsulate what should degrade and disintegrate into a monster that must be contained.  It’s a little like hiding away those unwanted parts of our lives, locking them away within our hearts and minds instead of allowing the natural release process to take place.

By intent I carried the tension and excess energy held within me to the park today.  I knew a brisk walk could be helpful, that the movement would encourage circulation of my mind, emotions, and spirit as well.  I was ready to be grounded and relaxed.

We circled through the lower level, and up the stairs to the upper level where my hummingbird friend so often greets me.  He was not there.  I whistled, and quickly he flew up to his perch saying, “Here I am!  So good to see you.”  He turned his head from side to side, viewing the field below.  “Isn’t it amazing, all the colors you can percieve in just one look?”  What a beautiful day.

“Look around you, what a beautiful day.   Let go of those thoughts that linger.  By holding them they cannot breathe, and they can turn toxic, like the landfill.  Toxic thoughts can spoil the greatest ideas.  Look around instead, and see.  Isn’t it amazing all the colors within our vision?  What a beautiful day.”

Sink to That Depth, If That’s What it Takes

Finally, a sunny day.  It’s noon, and though a weekday, I expected to see more dogs and owners at the dog park.  I began my trek with only my two dogs for company.  Walking toward the meeting tree, the place where I greet my little upper-level hummingbird friend, my mind was full of thoughts.  None of those thoughts meant anything beyond the importance I assigned them.

No one was at the tree to greet me.  I whistled, but no one came.  This was fine I knew I would see this hummingbird soon enough.  We walked along the curving road, and continued down the hill.

Approaching a small madrona tree nestled against the steep hill, I searched for signs of my little spirit friends.  Just a few days ago this perch was shown to me.  No sign of the hummingbird residing in this section of the park, either.  I continued the walk, exchanging a few words with another dog walker I passed, and circled back to the hill.  I paused as I neared the madrona again, and saw my little friend arrive on an upper branch.   With his back turned to me he said, “Look at me, tell me I’m special”.  Within a blink of an eye, the not-so-hidden message came into view, and I replied, “Are you a hummingbird, or a mockingbird?”

I continued up the hill and around the corner.  Within a moment of my arrival, my upper level hummingbird arrived.  He fluttered for a moment, then dropped quickly to a lower branch beyond view.  “What’s this maneuver about?”  He returned within sight, hovering long enough to assure I was watching, then flew in a straight upward line.  “I can fly high, oh wait, even higher”, and then he dropped quickly and purposefully downward and out of sight.

Sure, the view is so much better from the heights, but sometimes even the winged will sink to that depth, if that’s what it takes.  Just remember that its only a stopping point along the journey.

Someday You Will No Longer Need Us

Today I made room in my day to walk the dogs at the off-leash park.  We had a short break in the rain, and I knew that the dogs would not appreciate that I would not have a chance to walk them in the following two days.

The air was thick with moisture, but it was a good feeling, being a little on the cool side that day.  The grass had been cut, it had grown dramatically over the past two months.   My smaller dog could feel lost in the growth. The aroma of cut grass lingered in the air.

As I walked toward my hummingbird meeting place I whistled, seemingly for the dogs, but I knew it was for the birds.  No one came this time.   This is okay, I am sure I will see one on my return to the car.  We walked down the hill and circled around the field.  Stopping for a sniffing, exploring rest along the way, I found a four-leaf clover, then another.  I decided to stop at ten, and enjoyed the energy and interpretation of each number as I glanced around for the next discovery.  Ten is good, the number of manifestation.

As we walked back up the hill I reflected on these finds.  Circling onto the upper level, and the path that hugged the fence, my thoughts drifted toward our need to find answers, or explanations for the things that enter our awareness.  I don’t need a reason for ten, but my mind seeks a meaning, and enjoyed the idea of manifestation.   It’s all okay.  Today has been a lovely walk.

We rounded the last bend before the parking lot, and I whistled again.  I stopped and waited.  No hummingbird today.  I could feel the presence though.  Their presence was not restricted to a little body on a branch, but in the air, the trees, and the colors.  “Someday you will no longer need us”.  I knew this to be true, but still held on to the interludes, longing to continue this relationship.

Somehow I new that this absence had nothing to do with a lack, and could not be defined as “missing out”.  This day’s message fit nicely with an earlier awareness and posting on my Keen site.  “When we are complete within ourselves we no longer feel the need, and have more space to welcome others into our lives.  Some day you will no longer need us”.   Today has been one of those days.

Remember Who You Are

hummingbird shamanThis morning I had a phone call with an associate, discussing plans for the day.  This day will be a busy one, for I’ve been away for several days, and will be playing catch-up.  Sitting in my office, turning my head toward the speakerphone on my cell phone, I spoke of the tasks I must complete today.  My eyes gazed out the window as I spoke.

Suddenly a little form came into my view.  It was a hummingbird.  He centered himself in front of my window, within a few feet of the building, and hovered, pointing in my direction.  “Okay, okay, I’ll get my priorities straight”, I thought.   As soon as I stated my new-found focus he turned and landed on the utility line crossing the property.   This was no hint.  This was a directive.

I was surprised by this visit, for the feeders are on the opposite side of the building.  This was the first time I had seen a hummingbird outside this window, and I am in my office nearly every day.   There was no doubting that this visit contained a message, and in fact as I type this he returned to oversee my activity.

“Remember who you are” was the message.   Is that a simple statement?  Yes, and no.  Within that thought I hear the voice of love, for the universal appreciation of my existance.  I had set aside what is truly of value, and focused instead on the pressures and responsibilities of the day and remaining week.   It took the gentle touch of a hummingbird’s presence to remind me of who I am, beyond the activities of the day.

“Remember who you are” is a simple thought.  What value are the outward activities without the spark of self and purpose instilled within every step?   By bringing our thought to who is making these steps, to the purpose and expression of spirit we can see the life force energy and passion that fuels these activities.  But it goes even deeper than this: focus simply on your own existance, and understand that you are treasured for being, not for doing.  Doing is the bi-product of being.  Remember who you are. Your steps will then we seen as an expression, not a duty, and will live in the spirit of support for your journey.
