Finally, a sunny day. It’s noon, and though a weekday, I expected to see more dogs and owners at the dog park. I began my trek with only my two dogs for company. Walking toward the meeting tree, the place where I greet my little upper-level hummingbird friend, my mind was full of thoughts. None of those thoughts meant anything beyond the importance I assigned them.
No one was at the tree to greet me. I whistled, but no one came. This was fine I knew I would see this hummingbird soon enough. We walked along the curving road, and continued down the hill.
Approaching a small madrona tree nestled against the steep hill, I searched for signs of my little spirit friends. Just a few days ago this perch was shown to me. No sign of the hummingbird residing in this section of the park, either. I continued the walk, exchanging a few words with another dog walker I passed, and circled back to the hill. I paused as I neared the madrona again, and saw my little friend arrive on an upper branch. With his back turned to me he said, “Look at me, tell me I’m special”. Within a blink of an eye, the not-so-hidden message came into view, and I replied, “Are you a hummingbird, or a mockingbird?”
I continued up the hill and around the corner. Within a moment of my arrival, my upper level hummingbird arrived. He fluttered for a moment, then dropped quickly to a lower branch beyond view. “What’s this maneuver about?” He returned within sight, hovering long enough to assure I was watching, then flew in a straight upward line. “I can fly high, oh wait, even higher”, and then he dropped quickly and purposefully downward and out of sight.
Sure, the view is so much better from the heights, but sometimes even the winged will sink to that depth, if that’s what it takes. Just remember that its only a stopping point along the journey.
