Walking with Wings

The Hummingbird holds a special place in our shamanic world, serving as a link between the physical worldly plane and the higher spiritual plane.

Greatness is not based upon our size, but on our presence. Be here, in the moment, and experience the lightness of being as you walk with wings.

From Here I Can See Everything

hummingbird and mountainAs I walked along the path on the return to my car, I looked to the still-barren tree where my hummingbird friend perches for our talks.   There was no sign of him.

I had not been to the park for several days, having been on business out of town.  The dogs had been anxious for their walk today.   By mid afternoon the larger dog, a black lab, was restless and whining to go out.  Now was as good a time as any, despite the intermittent rain.  We did a quick walk, circling around the track as I talked on my cellphone.  I asked for confirmation from the universe of the value of my call, and quickly found two four-leaf clovers.   I smiled with this discovery, and confirmed a time for our next call.  The dogs and I circled back toward the hill, headed for my car.  It was time to go, for now my shoes were wet from my trek through the tall grasses.

I stopped at the tree where the hummingbird and I so often meet.  Sending out a gentle whistle I waited for a response.  He arrived quickly, and perched on his tree.  With his back to me he looked to and fro.  “From here I can see everything”, he said.  I saw many images, from the responsibility to tend to his territory, to ownership of all-he-sees.  He fluttered a wing, then scratched his head.  “From here I can see everything”, he said, but this time it was different.  The images changed to perceiving the sky and the beauty that surrounds him.  Suddenly I became aware of the sweetness in the air, the sounds that bring me into the moment, and the many colors contained in something as simple as the grasses of the field below.

“From here, I can see everything”.  With a watchful eye comes opportunity to give as well as receive.  With a watchful eye you can survey all within your scope, both as the guardian and the visionary, able to care for your world and be nourished, all within the same breath.

p.s. This photo was taken on an earlier day, and the story experienced in June 2008.  The waves of color that seem to emimate from the cloud-covered mountain is an effect that came without computer modification of the photo.  This patterning only occurs when I photograph the hummingbirds and the distant mountain.   The hummingbird is perched on the upper-left part of the tree.

Beauty In Real Life

Today’s walk was during the high point of the day, and this day is hot.  I whistled for my friend, and at first he did not come, but within a minute he came to his tree.  He did not perch, but drifted down to the lower branches of this barren tree.  I walked to the wooden fence and looked over, and my hummingbird friend hovered just above the ground, looking for something.  He passed over to my right side, within a few feet of me.  Then he flew quickly by my face, and to his taller tree.  Today is hot, he needs to be shaded.

The dogs and I took a quick but calm walk down the hill and around the park, and I talked on my cell phone with my partner for the next Healing Drum event, upcoming on the fall solstice weekend of September 19th.  We continued our talk as I walked back up the hill to the hummingbird meeting place.  “He’s in the tree, shaded”, I told her, but we could feel his presence.  He sent her greeting, and his magical healing as he had done in the past.

“He wants you to know you are beautiful”, I shared with her.  “When you are within the moment, centered within yourself, that beauty is amplified.”  What a wonderful message to convey to another.  Beauty in real life comes not from our decoration, but our declaration of our spiritual presence.  Beauty in real life, it shines from our heart and through our eyes.

I’m so Happy to See You

This was the greeting as I saw my little friend yesterday.  “I’m so happy to see you”.  He was not content to sit on his usual perch, no, he had to fly.  After a momentary flutter he dashed straight up, then dove down quickly, as if to show his amazing strength.

My heart rose as quickly as this little hummingbird in his flight.  He made it clear that his attendance at this time was for my benefit.  He continued his dance, making circles before me, then disappeared down the hill.

As I continued on my walk I reflected on this visit.  “I’m so happy to see you”.  What a beautiful sentiment!  This simple statement can fill the heart, clear the mind, and impress upon the soul.

It is easy to feel lost, or little, with the flurry of activity and drama that surrounds us.  One simple statement, “I’m so happy to see you”, can make a world of difference in this world of indifference.  This sentiment, when offered in a true light, should be infused into every greeting.  It offers recognition of the true value of those around us, as above, so below.
