This morning is a cool dry morning, delightfully sunny for this typically overcast area. I began the day with the typical, letting the dogs outside, and starting a fire to warm the house for the day. Within minutes the dogs were ready to return to the house. As I opened the door a hummingbird darted from his feeder, responding to the noise and activity around the door. All is well though, and I know he will return soon enough. The feeders are abundant in nectar, and the little flowers on the patio are still blooming, providing a welcomed November food source.
Once the coffee was ready I prepared my workspace in the living room. The accomodations there are comfortable, and the warmest place in the house being nearest the fire. The light of morning is welcome, and I opened the shades to let in the day. A flutter appeared by the small cherry tree, and one of the remaining hummingbirds made his presence known. Resting on a leaf barren branch he made it clear that he was there for me, watching over my actions. He insisted on the next step, as he does in his hummingbird way.
“No matter what you do, no matter where you go, you will always be faced with your own reflection in the mirror. Your support will be there, whether you see it or not, and that support will reposition as it must to be there for you”. I lean forward, and look outside my windown, and there he remains, perched on the cherry tree. This is not his typical perch, most often he has been seen outside my office on the tall lilacs, closer to the feeders. I lean forward again, noting his regal presence. His size is not important, for he radiates far beyond his physical appearance.
“All right”, I respond, “Its time I listen, and write another posting”. My hummingbird remains outside my window to assure that the job is complete, turning his back to me and watching. This tiny birds are feirce guardians.
He speaks to me in pieces, and those pieces form a puzzle that beckons to be completed. Within minutes I see the meaning behind the message. Life requires a response. We can stand before the buffet and complain about what is missing. We can taste each and every item, and fill ourselves before we have a chance to decide what we’d like on our plate. There’s even the possibiltty of standing there, so close to the buffet, but waiting for others to serve us or decide for us what is best. While the possibilities around us are amazing and abundant, and should be recognized as such, it does not stop there. The value comes only when we recieve, and accept what is offered. The value is calculated in our response.
I treasure this message, and accept its implications in my own life. Meanwhile, the little feeder by the lilacs needs tending. Its nectar is treasured, and the hummingbird accepts all it has to offer.
