Hummingbird Migration
We know that many hummingbirds migrate for the winter months, though not all. The story, or folklore, is that the hummingbird will slip under the feathers of the much larger birds to hitch a ride south. This idea goes right along with the legend of the hummingbird and the condor, and their challenge to prove who could fly to the sun.
The place I call home
Not all hummingbirds will migrate, as I have learned. There are at least three who remain throughout the winter, even with the occasional snow. During these temporary cold snaps I am very diligent in making sure that the feeders are full and drinkable. Many a morning I am up in the twilight of the morning to put the house-warmed feeders back outside, and I am fortunate to be able to work at home on the days when the temperature never rises above freezing.
I do not know the author of this poem, though I do know it was written well over 100 years ago. I am honored to share this poem with you today:
A voice that calleth us far away
“O, wise little birds, how do ye know
The way to go,
?Southward and northward,
to and fro? ?
Far up in ether piped they,
‘We but obey ?A voice that calleth us far away.’”
