Finding Our Place In Anothers World

This is not the first day I’d noted the “great chase” as a younger hummingbird was chased from the feeders by the older alpha male. It doesn’t matter which feeder, front or back, it is clear that the message is “what is mine is mine”. Hummingbirds are fierce in defending their territories.

Hummingbird Story

I watched out the window, seeing this younger male approach. His visits are short but sweet, nectar wise. His ruby colored chest feathers have grown strong in their luminous color. I believe this is his first winter. Over only a few minutes time I see him hover, not bothering to rest on the perch as he feeds. He quickly flies away, returning moments later. It’s obvious that he does not wish to waste so much energy, and finds a hiding place low on the rhododendron, this being one of the few places to rest. His perching doesn’t last long, and he again returns to the feeder. It is certain that at least once in this day he will be discovered and chased from this territory that is claimed by another, yet he continues to return.

Living In Another’s World

Some of us live in this world feeling as though we are the masters of our territory, and though we don’t use the words we know we are “alpha”. Some live in this world living quietly on the outskirts, receiving what we need to live, but knowing that what we see around us belongs to another. Realistically we all live with both perspectives, for we are both givers and receivers. This tiny hummingbird who is always on the look-out knows both the risks and the benefits, and does what he must for his own survival. He is willing to endure the game of chase, and is never seen challenging the alpha.

This is the pattern, and it’s likely to continue. Again as I look out the window I see the silouette of this young male hummingbird under a leafy cover. I promise to keep secret this new hiding space, and will play my own role, giving service by keeping the nectar flowing.
