This morning should have been atypical for me, hop in the car and an hour later I would be at my destination. Not so, per my car, as it struggled to climb the hill. A burning smell let me know that something needed to be fixed, and instead of gliding onto the freeway I turned instead into the mechanics driveway, something I knew would be the opposite of the “free way”.
Hummingbirds – They are Everywhere
No worries, I can endure within the conditions. As I waited for a ride back home while repairs were made I found in the stack of magazines a bird magazine. I flipped from page to page, finding readers photos and comments on every topic you could imagine. Well, not the topics we discuss here at Hummingbird Shaman, but even without the focus on the meaning behind those visits each comment expressed their love for the winged creatures that habitat our world.
I came across a page with hummingbird stories, and saw a most unusual photo of a hummingbird hanging upside down at a feeder, as though it was giving its best impression of a bat! Hummingbirds can go into a sleep-like state to conserve their energy. Surprisingly they can survive drops in temperature, lowering their own body temperature and heart-rate to survive the extremes.
We Endure and Do the Best We Can
How do we equate my shift in the day to the hummingbird in the magazine? We endure, and do the best we can under the conditions we face. There is only so much of us that is able to predict what comes next, and planning only carries us so far. It is a keen eye, a clear head, and a strong determination to make things work out that carries us through the challenges we may face.
It’s not so bad working from home today. The doors are open, allowing me to hear the chattering of the hummingbirds as they refill their bellies and fight to maintain that right. The stillness and quiet of my personal surroundings is actually a refreshing change from a more populated, busy environment.
We do endure, keeping a cool head, finding ways to make things work. The hummingbirds, they give no thought to it like we do. We love to make the most of weighing and measuring our situations, pulling in our ego, our desires, and all the other considerations. They just do the best they can with what they have to work with, and in the end isn’t that what counts?
