When Hummingbird Shaman began a few years back it was step in my own spiritual journey. The stories reflected my own experience with subtle messages and amazing hummingbird acrobatic flights shared with me during my walks in a nearby rustic park. I took the leap not just to write my experiences but to share them openly with the world. That is the soul speaking, openly, and while there is risk of being criticized or ridiculed that risk is taken. It seems there is no other way to reach out to the souls of others than to take that first step within ourselves.

Since that first post the stories continued, and to this day individuals across our hummingbird-filled countries share their stories of hope and love. Each story helps us to confirm something that never hold still: the very essence of life that is woven into our lives. We can keep this essence alive by offering experiences, sharing the stories through facebook or google+. Thank you everyone for playing a part in this ongoing community of spirit.

Elizabeth’s Hummingbird Story

A HummingbirdShaman reader shared with us:

As my dear friend was about to pass on at the age of 100…The morning was filled with sadness for I knew it would be my last conversation with my dear friend and neighbor. He looked up and reached out to me… His eyes could barely open. He inquired if “they” would let him take his teeth. I found it funny that he was thinking about that. I replied with my usual sick humor… Yes you can, I sure as hell don’t want them. He chuckled …He drifted off again… I kissed him and wished him a sweet journey. As I started to leave his side he said: I think I’ll take the hummingbirds too then! the hell you will I quipped ;

That was Saturday the last time we spoke. Monday morning I was called as he took his final breath. I thought nothing about our last few words until later that morning…. I went outside to look at the winter garden a bit confused with sun shining. As I looked toward my neighbors yard to find some comfort…all the flowers we enjoyed… There between our two yards laid Rubio, our alpha male humming bird… I couldn’t believe it. We have been feeding him year round for 9 years. My tears turned to laughter as I thought… He got the last laugh!

Coincidence? A new little alpha male took his place before the sun set. I placed Rubio in one of my plants that sits just below one of my feeders….

Sleep well my two wonderful gifts. I will carry on feeding duties until we meet again.
Eliabeth

Thank you Elizabeth for sharing your story.

Coincidence or Symbolic?

Earlier in the same day as this story arrived I was asked during a reading session to look from the eyes of the spiritual perspective at the upcoming passing of an animal companion. I could see this animal within what could be described as a cocoon of energy, very clearly wrapped up within this very private experience. There were no barriers to our communication, not the phone lines, or in this case Skype, nor any language barriers as this blessed spirit in four-legged form shared a message with me to translate into words for it’s owner.

The passage of the alpha hummingbird so close to the time of the neighbor’s passing, is it coincidental, symbolic, or a sign meant to show that an ending is also a beginning? No one can say for sure, and even if we had concrete scientific proof that too can be questioned. Not everything in life should fall under such scrutiny. In this case the heart and the soul hold the answer and the meaning, clearing stating, “I need nothing else, I am one with my own truth”.

Living within our Network of Love

Our words, our thoughts, and our interactions weave together so delicately, with seemingly unrelated and distinctly different worlds crossing in a web of connectivity that cannot be seen by the eyes. What form they appear in may differ, it could be the appearance of a hummingbird, a casual comment or a last laugh. Each carries the same ingredient, the lingering fragrance of the soul that leads us back to that connective moment and the love we have shared. What better way to reinforce the essence of love, it doesn’t matter if it is through what seems like a strange comment, or rambling, or even a little “twisted humor”. Anything that allows us to connect is a good thing.

Thank you again for sharing your story, Elizabeth, and reminding us that it is not an end but a renewal and transition. The alpha hummingbird who shared hummingbird moments with these two neighbors for nine years will indeed be missed, but a new opportunity opened for a young alpha hummingbird. Life will be different, but those delicate threads remain, giving us a chance to weave an alliance between sadness and laughter, between the old and the new. Life and death are simply lines we cross, but our love spans across anything that may appear to be a border.

God Bless,

You’d think this time of year would be uneventful in the case of hummingbirds, but far from it. The usually mild winter Pacific Northwest has taken its turn, and snow has arrived. While we didn’t get quite the volume of snow that was expected we did wake up today with a surprise. The slight warming in the late afternoon had frozen during the night, and now the snow was covered with a sheet of ice. Temps remain below freezing, and branches are caked in ice as well, with many tree limbs snapping from the weight they cannot shake.

Hummingbirds in Winter

There are three hummingbirds who live near me year-round. The feeders may not empty nearly as fast during this time of year as the summer, but they continue to visit. During these freezing times the hummingbirds stay much closer, conserving their energy to sustain body temperature.

Hummingbird Food – Simple Sugar Water

Hummingbirds do eat bugs, lots of them, and this gives them the protein they need, but they also drink nectar and our home-brewed sugar water to give them the carbohydrate boost they need. As for me I rarely consume sugar, at least white sugar, but keep a 10 lb bag for you know who. How ironic to run out of sugar just in time for the ice storm.

Already mid afternoon and the temperature has not risen. Time for drastic measures. I bundled up, braving the dangerous 100 yard walk across the ice to my neighbor’s house. “Can I borrow a cup of sugar?” Yes, I was suddenly living the life of a cliché. My neighbor was glad to help, passing to me the rest of the bag that didn’t quite fit in the sugar storage container. Within no time I was ready to prepare a new batch of sugar-water for my fine feather friends.

Tomorrow will bring warmer weather, and soon enough the ice will be gone. For today I’m happy for these hummingbird moments and what has turned out to be a very pass through the land of cliche’.

As a strongly gifted intuitive person, practiced in seeing the subtle nature of life, it’s easy for me to step back from the picture and let the connectivity of thoughts and events take place. I’ve seen this in sessions, with symbols and signs appearing between scheduling and the actual session, with strong, powerful examples appearing that help explain and support the shift that my client seeks. I see it in my writing as well, with one simple observation tying somehow to another in a way that soon inspires a message. In a sense the moments of my day and early morning insights are my spring. Consciousness will always give us a way of preparing for anything the future holds, whether it is a hummingbird moment, the sessions with my clients for realization and release, or whatever else the day may hold.

Preparing for Anything

Already I see the trend toward buying new hummingbird feeders, and I’ll admit that I’ve even been caught in that stream of thought. I love the fact that the bird shop is only a few doors down from Trader Joe’s, assuring that everyone in my circle gets good food. But it is still winter, and though the hummingbirds stay in my area year round in many places the hummingbirds are yet to return. Why such a strong desire now?

In nature there are few things that are not preceded in some way by some unseen activity. A flowering bulb begins in the earlier fall by setting roots so that in the springtime growth can come quickly and secure. What more could we ask for ourselves than to have support when we are ready for a change?

Hummingbirds and Spring

Our anticipation is a gift, one we exercise in one instance but somehow forget when it comes down to something for ourselves. How often do we prepare for the little things in life: happiness, a well-deserved rest, a visit with a dear friend. Looking back we can see the outcome of our investment, find those happy memories. Where else in our live can we turn this same ability to help feed the fire of success?

Spring is just around the corner, and even though it may be months away the time will pass quickly. How prepared are we for our next step, our desired changes, and the future of our world?

Setting the tone of support

I know its a very simplistic way of giving, but every time I replenish those hummingbird feeders I am practicing my abilities to anticipate need and respond. What cannot be measured is how much this “wave of thought” influences the bigger world, the network of events and the consciousness that surrounds us? We’ve seen how the power of prayer works, and may speak of it but how much do we believe in our power to influence?

Spring Is Here Ready or Not

The ground may still be frozen and the flowers yet to break ground, but in a sense spring is already here. We choose how to apply our energy, time, and resources. Ask those who have lived in the spirit of success and they will agree that there are many other unseen resources that lead to success. In times of economic breakdown we can see it as a dying away, or we can see it as an opportunity to break new ground and build something new. During lulls like the winter we have the opportunity to turn inward, intuitively or insightfully, to plan, design, and review. Spring is here, ready or not, in nature and in business. Now is the time to invest our energies into a strong root, a solid foundation, so that we are ready for the next step, the leap we long for in our lives.

Why do hummingbirds make an appearance in our lives, is it by choice or by chance? Many years ago, in my teen years, I spent summer months visiting my sister and helping at their fishing resort. The days were hot, and the hummingbirds loved the flora by the water. On occasion a hummingbird would fly into the boathouse and try to escape through a closed-up window. My compassion lead me to catch them and carry this tiny winged wonder to freedom. Looking back I can see that this was one of the isolated times in my early life when I could act with an open heart without some complicating feedback or judgment.

Hummingbirds In My Life

Many years passed, and my next encounter with hummingbirds took place years later. I had placed hummingbird feeders on my patio, but they were often untouched. Of all times possible, when did the hummingbirds show up? At dusk during the cub scout planning meetings held at my house once a month. Why then? Why did it have such an impact on my consciousness? In those days the hummingbird visits were rare, but I did keep the feeder, just in case they would make an appearance.

Hummingbirds – A Sign of Life?

Over the past 10 years I have returned more of my time and attention to my meta-counseling services, a direction clearly chosen in my teen years and carried beyond. My studies and work as a spiritual counselor and teacher began in the early 80′s, and later shared my attention with business ventures and family. On many occasions I have received callings to give more of my time to helping others on this meta-level, that place where we are able to make change in our lives quickly and with greater ease.

Why the hummingbird encounters? These encounters are always brief but carry forward in our thoughts. My best means of describing them is to call them compass-points, giving us a glimpse at something unseen but clearly felt.

The Parallel Between Hummingbird and Spirit

I see a parallel between the hummingbird and our own spirituality. The encounters are captivating yet brief. There is an undeniable spark that ignites within us like that deep uncontrollable breath that comes out of nowhere. How many times are these insightful or awakening moments overwritten by our logical mind? “What a vivid imagination you have”, but we also know the difference. There are some experiences that trigger a response from us more deeply than others.

When we ask for something to come into our lives, how do we go about asking for it? How much control do we have in the outcome? How much influence can be have outside our own “space”? Calling all hummingbirds, is it possible to invoke or invite the energy of the hummingbird into our lives, or anything else?

Can We Invoke Hummingbirds?

Is it possible to invoke hummingbirds into our lives? What does it mean to “invoke”? The word invoke has been used in many ways, with the original meaning in both Latin and French meaning “to call”. From an energy-awareness level I see that to approach a desired outcome by “invoking” carries more weight in the desire or plea. There is a vested interest when we invoke. There is also greater involvement by the will. To invoke is also a more conscious act, very yang in its approach.

What about invite? To invite is often more “polite” in its nature. Seen intuitively it appears to be more of an opening of the door than the more direct statement made when we invoke. To invite has the air of the yin energy, more of the heart-felt feeling than the conscious asking.

Is one better than the other? There is no clear cut answer. Here we delve into mathematics, the weighing and measuring of our desires, perceptions and our own value. We must also bring into consideration our free-will, and ask the question: when we invoke is the freewill of another still respected? When we ask does it come from a place of love already overflowing, or from an empty space?

Calling All Hummingbirds

We can always ask. The dividing line doesn’t really exist, and no matter which way we look at it we will always find a mix that crosses our openness for the “greater good” with our ability to ask for something clearly and well-defined. Sometimes we need to defer the outcome of our prayers to a sign that comes suddenly and unexpected just so we don’t block the experience with our all-so-powerful mental self.

What is a prayer? It is a formula and space that we create, with the element of time twisted in so that what we ask for has a chance to occur. Does the answer to our prayer come from within, or from some cosmic force? Perhaps we must settle for the answer: both. Let us pray.

Hummingbird Prayer for 2012

May it be with the blessings of Great Spirit that as we are given as many opportunities as there are breaths.
May we recognize and realize what animates us, and allow that part of us to lead our every step along the way.
May we invest our best in everything we do, freely , in a way that is self-replenishing.
May the outcome of our investment echo back to us in a way that inspires and delights.

Please share your comments and questions. God Bless, and have a wonderful transition into 2012.

There are signs everywhere, or so they say. Signs as bold as a billboard, and signs as subtle as a hummingbird. It’s funny the way life works and how powerful our insights can be when we step out of the obvious “signs” that we’ve come to expect as “real life”. A whole new world and whole new perspective open up as we open our heart to subtle connections between the physical world and the spirit realm that animates us. Connects that seemed lost can be renewed, and support can be found even when we feel alone.

Lis’ Hummingbird Story

My brother passed away summer 2010- he was the “Vice-President” of the “Hummingbird” dorms at school. Since his passing I had a very unique experience happen- a baby hummingbird was outside my classroom door crying for his mom. I looked around and there was no nest to be found…the custodian mentioned that he had already taken it across the street, but it somehow ended up back on our campus! It wasn’t hurt, it was just hungry and lonely. I took the risk of taking it home and nursed it for a week. I mixed sugar and water and even tried feeding it bugs! At this point- my goal was just to help it survive and the thought of a connection with my brother didn’t cross my mind. My father came home to visit for a week for his birthday and he helped me nurse it as well. After a few days we figured it was time to let it go because it was already trying to fly in the butterfly house. We tried to release it, but it came back to the butterfly house so we figured we would give it another night. The next day, we slowly tried to coax it out and also introduced it to the feeder so that it would know how to feed from it and where to find it. We were happy to see it fly away, but it didn’t go very far. It stayed perched on the tree right next to my back patio. For weeks I witnessed it feed and woke up to it chirping on that same tree! It was such a beautiful experience! Months went by, and more hummingbirds came by and joined it. I was able to take great pictures of all of this! It wasn’t until someone mentioned a spiritual connection to my brother that I actually gave it a thought…I realized that it was his way of letting us know that everything was Ok. Since then, I have seen a couple hummingbirds flying nearby when I am feeling sad. Most recently, during Thanksgiving, I spent all night crying and when I woke up and went out to the patio- I saw a hummingbird feeding! It had been at least a couple months since we had any hummingbirds around! I’m not sure if my story means anything to anyone else, but I just figured I would share.

Sharing Our Stories

Oftentimes we keep the more subtle experiences in our lives to ourselves. We train ourselves to do this, having our childhood observations and stories dismissed by the adults around us in their attempts to direct our attention to “more important things”. But those insights that come to us on these more inward levels, isn’t that what feeds us in a way that thought and logic can’t even fathom?

I learned many years ago that, at least in terms of our soul-energetics and subtle abilities, the most powerful influence we have is sharing. When we share our experience we give others the opportunity to acknowledge their own experiences, and put into words something that may have been only a feeling.

Thank you Lis for sharing your story, and God bless. Perhaps this young hummingbird came into your life for such a long time period to give you opportunity to share and care. Thank you for giving us a reminder to step outside our closed doors and reach out so we don’t forget how precious our time shared can be. While the loss of your brother in your life runs deep so does the love that still lives within your heart. He is very fortunate to have you within his circle, even beyond the days he walked beside you.

God bless.

MJ wrote: “I am in the midst of a 40-day desert meditation and today while I was returning from meditation, I saw a hummingbird sitting on a tree branch, face lifted towards the sky with eyes closed. He/she appeared to be sleeping. I have never seen a hummingbird in this position before and am curious to know if you have any information in this regard. Thank you.”

Thanks MJ for sharing your experience!

The Intuitive Look At Hummingbirds At Rest

When I spiritually look at the hummingbird in those times I see them are in a different “state of being” than when they are just sitting on a branch looking always pivoting their head to see what is around them. Most of the time they are much like us in our day-to-day consciousness, though they are more accepting and allowing of their soul-presence as a part of their everyday lives.

How much of our attention is turned toward the world? A lot, for there are many things to relate to that could affect us good or bad. It is truly important that we fit in and survive.

Hummingbird Meditation?

Then we look back at those inward moments, when the hummingbird does close its eyes. Is it sleep or is it a deep trance-like state? Again from my sense of intuitive vision I see that during this time the hummingbird heartbeat appears to slow, and there is a shift all the way down to the cellular level. How could it be described? Perhaps as a loosening of the low-grade tension experienced by having to be “alert” so much of the time. What I see is a redistribution of energy, an inner-connectivity and blending as if the hummingbird was quite naturally creating a greater alliance within itself.

This perspective I share with you of the hummingbird is a mix of the soul or spirit level, the consciousness, and a medical intuitive view that delves into the flow of energy within the body. These are two very different levels of spiritual “seeing” or tuning into the subtle energies we call life.

Only For A Moment

Having our self-awareness really does come at a price. The hummingbird has it much easier, or more naturally to be in that state of meditation when the heart rate, the brain, and all the cells within the body align. The truth of the matter is that it does come naturally, but sometimes not so easily when it is not practiced or exercised like a well-toned muscle.

We all need our time of silence

When we take the time to turn within, to meditate, we loosen our tight mental grip on our “world” and turn inward to find something much bigger. I’m reminded of an article posted on IntuitiveMeaning.com called The Meaning of “I Close My Eyes So I May See” that circles back to this website and a post that includes this statement: “There are many levels of perception. We can turn inward to listen to the mind chatter, or we can still the mind and hear the visions of the soul.”

We are so fortunate that we can put into words our experiences and interpretations. It is much easier today to speak of the vibration of our thoughts and our ability to readily shift our consciousness. What do we gain when we close our eyes? We’ll never know if we let our mind run the show. Often our mind will take control, to try to figure out what to see before the soul has a chance to express itself. What do we do to change this?

Steps to Quiet the Mental Chatter

The first step is to observe the mind as it takes charge and says things like “Notice what? I didn’t see anything. What am I supposed to see? It’s not real.”

The second step is to realize that you are in observer mode. This is the most powerful step you can take in meditation, and very simple to practice.

The third step is to communicate from observer to the mental self and mind-chatterer to “Be Still”.

I Close My Eyes So I May See..

What should you expect to find when you “turn within”? It could be anything. I close my eyes so I may see, and I find a flower with the most amazing texture and aroma. Wait a minute, a smell? I didn’t expect that, but it made my heart awaken into a feel-good moment. Well worth it. A simple thought, a fragment of time, but a feeling that motivates and fills me with an energy that will sustain me for a much longer part of my day. What would my day be like without that simple infusion of self into my bigger world? Less guided, more diffused, and even more confused.

That is a hummingbird meditation, to turn within, loosen the grip without totally shutting out the world, and allowing that symbiotic connection between body, mind and spirit to recalibrate. The hummingbird practices these restful time to conserve energy, and we can observe the same practice for our own redistribution of energy in our day.
