Walking with Wings

The Hummingbird holds a special place in our shamanic world, serving as a link between the physical worldly plane and the higher spiritual plane.

Greatness is not based upon our size, but on our presence. Be here, in the moment, and experience the lightness of being as you walk with wings.

Room for us to be in the moment

This afternoon one of my friends and associates, a wonderful clairvoyant in Sydney, Australia sent me an email with a spiritual focus she chose to meditate on this day. Her words rang true, and her stance within the idea stood tall. I smiled, and chose to respond to her with my own insight of the day.

Funny, just moments before I saw this email message I had an interesting encounter. A hummingbird chattered loudly at me as I gathered a little more firewood from the patio. I did not see him initially, but he certainly saw me and sent his voice out loud and clear. As I glanced to and fro he came into my vision. It was the alpha male, strong and powerful. He looked over his domain, the feeders, and said, “pay attention, we’re hungry”. I looked around and through imagery replied to him, “You have plenty, only one of the feeders is empty”. But he stood his ground. The message lingered in the air, and I understood his point of view.

Spring is here, and life cannot help but spring forward. After a restful winter the world is hungry for growth.

The feeders empty quickly these days, and with everything I am working on it could be hours before I check the sugar water supply again. Right now there is a need and that need is strong. It took little time or effort for me to refill the empty container. These hummingbirds have ravenous appetites for such little bodies!

Respond as you must, for the needs of the moment.

It is our role, and our right, to respond as we must. Most of our day goes by with actions and reactions that are automatic, almost unconscious. How much more effective will we be if we bring just a little more thought into our steps, our thoughts, and our breath? Some may argue, “there’s so much to do”, and I agree. Bring it to the next step: there is so much to do and so much room for us to be in the moment.

Making the Most of the Moment

Yesterday morning I found myself returning to my routine after a few days absence.  As usual, I was making the most of my morning, moving gracefully between writing, breakfast, and tasks around the house. One task that would not wait was refilling the preferred hummingbird feeders in my garden.  One of those feeders is the old attached to the window of my office.

Later that morning I returned to my desk and glanced at the feeder.  I could tell it’s new content had been discovered, for one side of the feeder was noticeably lower in its level of sugar water.  Just then the little male who frequents this feeder came by for a drink.

He perched and drank deeply.  From out of no where my thought went to him, “you’re going to stay all winter, aren’t you?”  Immediately I felt a wave of energy come toward me, sitting there only a few feet from this feeder and the little hummingbird, and I felt its warmth in my heart.  “Thank you”, and he drank again.  “I am fulfilled, and grateful for this nourishment”, and I knew he was far more in the moment than I.

“You’re welcome”, I conveyed to him.  I knew that this little bird could not associate me in my office with the food in his belly.  But the big spirit knew different, and engorged himself with the moment.  To taste the sweetness of the nectar, to satiate the body and enrich the soul in this experience.  There was far more to be gained than just a quick meal.  He was making the most of the moment, and in this instance, so was I.
