“What does it mean when a hummingbird flies right up to my face?” Hummingbirds come, and hummingbirds go, and life flies by almost as fast as a hummingbird in all its splendor. How often do we see what is happening around us, or take the time to linger in that place of pure enjoyment? I recollect a day at the park speaking with a sweet older woman who I saw often at the park. When I mentioned the hummingbird fluttering around us she turned to and fro, yet still could not see the hummingbird in motion. I am certain I have my own “visual misses”, when I simply do not give my attention to certain things, particular sounds, and visual cues offered by the world around me. In my world the hummingbird rarely goes by unseen.

What is it about these hummingbirds? There are people who share their stories of treasured individuals who have been in their life, and hummingbirds that appear in a way that seems to be a message from those loved and lost. There are those who share their moments when the burdens of life weigh so heavily on their hearts and leaves us feeling like nothing is within our reach, but then a tiny hummingbird appears to, in a sense, rescue them. This tiny creature conquers even the most powerful of our own hidden feelings and overwhelming thoughts. And even if the mental maze does reappears it resumes with a less impact. Why does this happen, and how? What is that strange invisible line that separates us, what what is that strange invisible web that connects us to the unimaginable?

Alicia’s Hummingbird Story

“Hi, today i was sitting out in the grass with my two parrots in the trees. I saw two humming birds playing tag, and one landed on the branch above my head. the other in another tree. I watched them go back and forth. I got up to get my birds and stood there as one flew right up to my face going left to right. It was beautiful. This is not the first time this has happened. I have had multiple humming birds at different points of time fly right up to my face.

I do have a feeder outside, this is the first occasion where there has been a feeder involved. I do make my own. Any meaning to this?”

A hummingbird flies right up to my face

Is this event when “a hummingbird flies right up to my face” coincidence? Some will say yes. Hummingbirds have no soul, they say, and their tiny little brains cannot fathom the idea of rescuing a heart from despair, or even something as simple as sharing a joyful moment of pure enjoyment. But then such opinions are offered from the mind, not the heart, soul, or the sense of interactivity or love. When someone asks “what does it mean when a hummingbird flies right up to my face” what are they asking about?

It took only a moment to see the thread within Alicia’s story, one of an open heart and a loving space. What a wonderful atmosphere to be a part of and share with others. Who set the stage for this joyful interaction? Was it the person, the one participant with the bigger brain and that broad range of abilities, or was it the birds who created this happy space? Perhaps we have to give credit to both, after all, it is a shared space.

What does it mean when a hummingbird flies right up to my face?

We pick up on moods, and feel a sense of comfort around some people, but not around others. Who’s to say that the world around us does not share the same feelings of trust and live with similar comfort zones? We all have the same sensory system, whether we listen to it or not. Do we go with what we feel on that gut level, or trust that feeling deep within the heart? As people we learn to rationalize, and block out the simple responses like “this feels good”.

Within Alicia’s story the image is clear, that space around her was created for sharing. There was no ego to overwhelm, no agenda. The key ingredient was acceptance, and the emotional wings were empowered by appreciation and love.

What makes this story so special? It is not what is seen, and it is not even the “cast” of players, though the hummingbirds and parrots are wonderful parts of this story. This story is more about the unseen, the undefinable “tone” that says “you’re welcome” in so many ways.

Is there such a thing as a healing bird? Does the hummingbird possess the power to heal, to inspire or prompt a healing shift within a human being, just by it’s presence?

The Healing Bird

From a scientific standpoint we could say no, a bird doesn’t have the consciousness, it’s brain is too small, and from the psychological standpoint “it is only your imagination”. Science rules, and always from “inside the box”. Science lives only in it’s own world, until of course it finds a way to measure and validate enough to make what we’ve known all along to be “real”. Certainly the relationship between a human being and a hummingbird being can’t be real.

Yet evidence exists that there is such a thing as the power of prayer. The world of faith became real to law enforcement in Washington D.C. the year when the murder rate dropped dramatically following a group meditation focused on reducing crime. Still not a believer? That’s human nature, to question.

Can a humming bird be a healing bird? Perhaps not in the eyes of science or our common teachings, but many individuals have lingered on their experiences with these tiny creatures. Why is it memorable? Something has to have taken place, conscious or not, to have made such a strong impression on our thoughts and our feelings. It also runs much deeper, beyond our thoughts, in a place that lives before words could ever come into form.

Our Ability to Believe In Something Like Healing

Our thoughts and beliefs, no matter how strong, can contradict with our “common sense”. We learn to stick with tried and true, yet at the same time ask for something “outside the box”. We speak of faith, yet so often question ourselves and the clues of confirmation that come our way. When we see or perceive something that is simple, heart warming, real how often do we turn away? Then we have those times when we boldly ask for an answer so clearly spelled out for us, and even then it’s so easy for us to waver.

Is it real, a healing bird?

Can this be answered? Perhaps not to the satisfaction of those who ask for evidence. We can measure the current in the brain, even map out our thoughts. But how can we ever measure the connection between our thoughts and our emotions or calculate a heart-felt moment? How can we measure the impression anything that stimulates our sense of purpose or our deepest values?

Can a hummingbird be a healing bird? By definition, yes. Anything that helps a person to restore themselves is healing. That healing influence could be a refreshing glass of water. It could be found in getting the nutrition that our cells cry out for. Healing could be found in a hand to hold, a silent affirmation of love and support, or a flutter of wings for that long but brief moment. Can a hummingbird be a healing bird? Healing is in the eyes of the beholder.

There’s nothing all that unusual about seeing a hummingbird at the window, though many have never had the experience. There are those times when a Hummingbird appears, and for some unknown reason there is a feeling of association. What do we associate it to? A feeling, a memory. A loved one who no longer has the words, the breath or the heartbeat to share with others. When the heart beat stops is it really the ending, or simply a shift from the fibers that hold us together? Could a hummingbird at the window be a messenger or sign that what cannot be touched is still with us even today?

The Hummingbird At My Window – Dana’s Story

A reader recently shared her own heart-felt story of the hummingbird that appeared one day. This tiny form took so little space, but held the moment in that state of timelessness. There are times when we stop questioning every little thing and how it all fits together, and just accept the idea that there is a bigger picture, a greater presence, and a universe that revolves around us.

“When my mother passed away suddenly due to a heart attack at the young age of 62. The next Valentine’s Day I was grieving and missing my mother that I asked God to show me a sign that my mother was ok. I have a stained glass cross that hangs on one of my french doors to the back deck. After my prayer a hummingbird was hovering next to the cross looking at me through the window. This put me at such great peace.”

At Peace – A Feeling Beyond Description

We all strive for a feeling of peace, taking steps to resolve our issues, calm our mind. Sometimes it’s easier said than done. Then there are those times when somehow everything fits together. This doesn’t happen in a way that we can replicate, we don’t even always know how we reached that point of peacefulness. But the feeling is indescribable.

Perhaps if we step away from asking how to reach that place of peace and focus instead of what is in place when we feel that sense of peace, we may have a greater understanding of how to bring peace into our everyday lives. What are the components of peacefulness? Agreement, connectivity, conclusion, acceptance. There are no borders, no walls to climb over.

The hummingbird at the window: How can a Hummingbird promote that sense of peace? They are so strongly in the moment, focused, aware. They move about with great agility, here and there in the blink of an eye, most of the time silently. For the most part we don’t even know they are near us, but turning our attention to recognizing them opens the door to a level of communication that goes beyond compare, if we allow it to be.

Thank you Dana for sharing your wonderful story, and bringing us such inspiration. Blessing to you and your dearest mom, her life was truly blessed to be remembered with such love.

Can the appearance of hummingbirds be a sign of hope? Life carries such simplicity and complexity at the same time, giving us so many events, and at times complications. Yet within the circle of every situation we are also provided room for resolution and growth.

There is no explaining why thinks happen in the way that they do, yet we continue to look for answers. We turn in every direction looking for those answers, then somewhere within the back of our mind we search yet again to see those subtle signs that reassure. Those who think they know the answers know more about the walls they live inside than the life within. Those who silence their minds long enough to see, feel, and expand beyond their own abilities are able to build those bridges that give us soul-presence, connectivity, and reassurance that we are not alone.

It is said “There are signs everywhere”. Signs of spirit are subtle, and being filled with such life they need not be anything more. It’s the man-made signs and messages that are bold, blatant, and “in your face”, thrown at us so often because they must convince us to believe in their stories and illusions. It’s those who live within that narrow band of existence who cast their denial, but we need not worry. Nothing so low can diminish our soul-presence, our hope, and our ability to Walk With WIngs.

Wendy’s Hummingbird Story

Hello,
After trying to find the meaning of hummingbirds, I came across this site, read many great stories and thought I’d share my own.

More than 4 years ago, my husband and I decided to add to our family. We were lucky to get pregnant quickly, but to then only lose the baby right before the 2nd trimester. At the time, I thought there was nothing more difficult to deal with than a miscarriage. We continued to try to get pregnant, and eventually needed the help of fertility treatments. Month after month, I was on a roller coaster of emotions…two weeks of being hopeful that we were pregnant would eventually lead into two weeks of depression when we found out we weren’t.
Nothing seemed to work in our favor.

We finally decided to give up on our own hopes of a biological child, and started our adoption journey. After getting home-study approved, we were matched with a birthmother three months later. I developed what I thought was a great relationship with the birthmother, who was expecting a baby girl in May 2011. We were so excited and prepared for our adopted-daughter’s birth. We had everything we needed and were just waiting for “the call” when the birthmother was to go into labor, which was to happen any day. I called our caseworker to ask a question, and she then informed me that the birthmother had already had the baby, was home with her husband, and was keeping the baby. We found out they were just using us to help them financially with medical expenses and rent.

We were devastated. I was extremely depressed. This was worse than the miscarriage. We were just days of thinking we were welcoming a baby daughter into our family, and it ended with no answer. My depression continued. However, I started to notice the presence of the occasional hummingbird in our back yard and outside a window I face regularly. I thought it was interesting to suddenly see hummingbirds and thought there had to be some sort of meaning. I actually saw it as a good sign that we would have a baby one day.

Four months after our failed adoption, we were again matched with a birthmother. I thought that the universe would right itself and we would have an easy adoption, but it was the opposite. This birthmother was an emotional mess, manipulative, and at times very uncaring. I continued to support her emotionally through crisis after crisis. It was wearing, but I did my best to build a relationship with a woman who would give us the most precious gift of all. She ended up not being a good match for us because of her instability and
manipulation.

However, just weeks before the adoption was to take place, we found out that…through a miracle of God…we ourselves were pregnant!! I thought immediately about the hummingbirds. I even thought our baby would eventually have some sort of nickname signifying a hummingbird. We decided to walk away from the adoption. Everything has gone perfectly with the pregnancy. We are having a baby girl. The universe did right itself and God brought us what we had been wanting for so many years.

Today on my daily walk, a hummingbird flew a foot from my face, just hovered there long enough for me to see its greenish-colored belly. I couldn’t believe it. I had never had one just hover right before my very eyes. It was a beautiful
moment. I’m just weeks from my due date in May and thought it was also related to our baby.

What can all this mean? Does a hummingbird come to you in time of need to shed light where light is needed?…to offer hope?…to show promise? Thanks for reading my story.

The Hummingbird Sign of our Circle of Love

Thank you Wendy for sharing your story. I personally felt very uplifted by the shift that lead to your own pregnancy. The hummingbirds were clearly a part of your journey, simple symbols that were close enough to be seen but far enough to let you be within yourself to complete your own journey.

The energy around your pregnancy is so joyful and you are clearly committed and supportive of the baby and spirit that inhabits this tiny body. You manage the energy well. This darling spirit speaks out of being so much like you, very “in the moment”. The expression “all things in good time” comes to mind, with great enthusiasm.

Is The Hummingbird Here To Assure Us?

What does it mean to assure? It means to lift us from our doubts. Can a hummingbird do just that, lift us from our own complications so we can see things more clearly? Surely their wing power could be symbolic, their ability to hover, their strength within that small body. Are hummingbirds a sign from some greater consciousness? We can question it all we would like, with our science and our logic, but we cannot change who we are. No logic will ever diminish our soul. Thank goodness that there are simple signs like hummingbirds that allow us to rise above our circumstances and tap into our own soul essence. This gives us hope, the threads that help us through our stormy times.

Thank you again, Wendy, for sharing your story. What a wonderful, blessed ending so symbolic of our soul-nature, that an ending is anything but an ending, it is a new beginning.

This week we have a hummingbird comment from a reader in a language I do not speak myself, but we have available to us so may tools for communication. I turned to Google to translate, and found a wonderful hummingbird story. It is clear that outside of our limited human spectrum that borders do not exist.

Roberta’s Hummingbird Story

It took the eyes of a friend who’s fluent in languages to recognize this story to be Portuguese. I welcome all visitors and genuine, symbiotic comments. You can read Roberta’s story in Portuguese, allow me to paraphrase in English:

“Whenever I’m with some anguish a hummingbird appears: in my shop, up the street, even at the stalls along the street, one place I am always emotional. This is very common. The last appearance was in my home, my husband called me because he saw the hummingbird, then went to see. The hummingbird was approached on the floor when he flew into the clothesline, then I got close, I raised my hand and I managed to catch him or without him even getting a little aloof. I was with him a few minutes and opened my hand to release him. He would not go, stayed in my fingers, so if frightened when they approached me, because otherwise it would be. What would that be in my life, what does this mean to me?”

Beija-flor: My Little Hummingbird

Is it a sign that the hummingbirds appear in Roberta’s life? Yes indeed, but like the challenge of translating one language to another the signs do not necessarily translate into a fixed message. These signs are more of an acknowledgement of our presence as well as our awareness. In these cases we allow ourselves to be open, without expectations, and life comes like the hummingbird, in it’s own “sweet” time.

Soul – Presence Knows No Boundaries

It is not just the hummingbird that defies the dividing lines that we’ve chosen to accept. Our soul, aka our spirit presence, can easily see and speak out in a way that crosses all barriers. While we don’t always call it such, we see it in others as they mesmerize us with their light.

We know how it feels, to be around someone who seems so alive and is such a joy to be with. It’s not often that we put it into words, or follow a path of thought that makes “sense” of those meta-impressions, perhaps not until now.

Roberta shares something with the hummingbird and spirit, and that desire in her heart to create that link between her own soul and the world around her. When we live in this state we welcome kindred spirits, connecting and communicating. This is not a space to merge, for in that instance we lose who we are and no longer see one-another. For us to reach another soul and be seen and heard, what a great blessing.

My Reply to Roberta

Roberta,

Shaman Hummingbird

In English:

Hummingbirds are aware of us in a way that we do not understand. When we live life to the fullest, expressing our emotions in a way that is both within and shared freely it is like the nectar of the flowers to our soul. You create a warm welcoming space where spriit can be present. God bless.

On my first relaxed morning at home in several weeks I had the benefit of a few hours to quietly awaken in the comforts of my home. How do we do that, create a comforting time? We move at our own pace, and surround ourselves with things that nourish us, things that we appreciate and enjoy. As I took those steps to create that perfect environment the finishing touches came from a hummingbird that appeared at my window.

Hummingbird Signs Hello I Am Here

I don’t know if my attention was already focused outward or if the movement caught my eye. Other small birds were already busily moving about after discovering seeds in their feeder, so a hummingbird dashing by could easily do so without being seen. In this case this hummingbird paused in the open and hovered upward in a lingering manner, then returned to it’s path to the feeder. It was this “going out of the way” flight that let this moment take root within my conscious thoughts. This moment brought a simple thought to my mind, but as that simple thought grew it formed many branches.

Where We Stand In The Moment?

There is a phrase, “No matter where you go, there you are”. I first saw this phrase on a travel book, and its all about making the most of it when you “get there”. There is one thing for certain though, no matter who we are or where we are heading in our lives we always live in the here and now. What that moment means to us and gives to us, now that is a whole other matter.

We have so many expressions and words that can be used to describe our own integration of our “self” into our lives. We can feel “stuck in the middle of it” or overwhelmed. We can also experience the opposite, feeling left out, distant, or detached. There is a whole array of other ways to describe our moment to moment experiences in life. No matter which moment-based experience we have they all a combination of inner perception and outer participation.

Hummingbirds Going Out of the Way for Comfort and Joy

It’s a simple little observation that lead to a thought of recognition. All those little things that we have and do that make us feel a sense of comfort and security are supported by our beliefs and interests.

There is a company in California that has created an artificial hummingbird, a machine that can hover and fly forward fast like a hummingbird. Video was released of this nano hummingbird, something that was actually developed for U.S. Defense research.

This nano hummingbird has a body shaped much like that of a real hummingbird, with a wingspan of just over 6 inches and a weight that mimics that of a live hummingbird of only two thirds of an ounce.

Life Mimics Life

Many of our inventions mimic life, but never come anywhere near the undeniable presence of the soul. Energy is movement, but it is not movement that captives our attention and awakens us. We can mimic the light of the sun, but artificial light cannot hold the radiance of sun light.

We can entertain ourselves with movies and television, and yet it is within our personal interactions with living, breathing bio-organisms that we open our hearts with the chance to walk away with far more than either party ever gave.

The Hummingbird – An Artificial Sign?

The hummingbird itself does not live in captivity, but it captivates our hearts. Small in stature, most often silent and unseen, the hummingbird is capable of awakening us from the spell of electronics and media, and the many other distractions that cause a detachment from our natural self. Leave it to the hummingbird to lift us from the ordinary, whether it’s an artificial hummingbird or the real deal.
