HummingbirdShaman.com is filled with stories of hummingbirds and other nature symbols that have been studied and watched by cultures around the world as symbols of divine presence and messages from God. In a sense we are no different today than we were in our primitive days: we give our attention to the physical needs and react to the world around us so that we stay safe and alive, yet we seek, and ask for something that cannot be seen.

We Are More Than Just Alive

There is more to life than just living, for we are conscious beings by design. But how do we build upon our awareness? The focus on nature and spirituality, whether combined or separated, is actually a pathway to the same place. Let’s look at one example, you will more clearly see why I use nature-consciousness, hummingbirds, and other nature spirits as a bridge to our own spiritual enrichment.

Bring your attention to the hummingbird, just for a moment. The rapid movement of it’s wings, the amazing colors reflected off it’s feathers, it’s tiny presence that is so captivating. This bird does not live in our fast-paced, mentally-stimulated world. it lives in a calmer more aware state. Hummingbirds live in what I call the “twilight” state, and we cannot appreciate a hummingbird, or anything in nature, without shifting our own consciousness into a slower alpha or theta state.

Our Twilight State

This state of consciousness, the Twilight state, is like a bridge between the yin and yang, the night and day, and our own presence within the world. Our mind wants to pull us in one direction, only one, and to live purely in the day-to-day consciousness. We tend to be so practiced in the beta frequencies of the brain that we forget the power and the pleasure found when we simply “tune to another channel”.

In fact, that description says it all. Would you be happy with the internet if you could only reach one website? No, you’d become bored, and would soon stop paying attention. The same applies to our conscious state, and meditation, prayer, spirituality, and nature all give us more consciousness bandwidth. The twilight state, a frequency of nature, and what is known as well as the meditative state or Theta frequencies. Shifting into that state and consciously remaining at that frequency gives us a chance to broaden our range of awareness and have a stronger sense of self while still “being” able to interact with the “world”.

Walk With Wings

I love those times of the day, the twilight times when we teeter between night and day. By bringing my attention to the beauty of the sky and the brilliant colors displayed with the sunrise and the sunset I am able to shift into a more happy consciousness. This is by choice, not chance or opportunity, I create that connection. By placing the calmer, focused and receptive thought into that time of day I am in charge of that moment.

Theta Brain Wave Consciousness

Even with so many times that I have seen it I am still surprised as I look outside, when the darkness has only begun to shift into day, and I see one of the hummingbirds already at a feeder, feasting on the nectar. We are both in the same place at the same time, taking the time to replenish as we begin a new day. My time spent in this mindful state of appreciation, allowing myself to spend this moment in the theta twilight consciouness, only takes a minute. But that moment is the bridge between the every-day and the infinite, so richly filled as thought it were some divine endorsement for the most amazing state of living. I turn and walk away, shifting my attention to the everyday world, but each step carries a tiny spark of that twilight consciousness, and I walk with wings.

See part one of “I close my eyes“…

As I approached that original meeting place I was truly surprised to see a hummingbird on the same tree where we had first met. This one was a little shy, but I approached quietly, going only as far as the fence would allow me. I fumbled to remember how to activate the camera on my phone, but when I looked up he was gone. I was happy to see this one on this day.

We turned and walked along a lower level area with a shelter. Our journey was slow and peaceful. But as we turned to walk along the fence line I heard a voice call out to me. Across this area, somewhere in the trees, was another hummingbird, asking me, “Where are you going? Why are you over there?

We crossed over to the road and walked up the hill. Half way along I spotted the small figure in a madrona tree. Its amazing how many of these little birds I see during a walk. It’s only a matter of focus, though. In many ways we choose what we will see.

I looked up the hill and saw something I had not seen before. One person was leading another with a vision-impairment cane, but that person also had a blindfold over their eyes. Perhaps they were learning to deal with an increasing impairment, or they were in training to understand the experience of the visually impaired. Either way, they were practicing a new sense of perception.

I too close my eyes so I can see when I turn within in an act of meditation. There are many levels of perception. We can turn inward to listen to the mind chatter, or we can still the mind and hear the visions of the soul. We are surrounded by many wonderful sights that can dazzle the eyes and entrance our hearts, if only we slow down long enough to see them.
