I never tire of those times when I am standing quietly and a hummingbird appears nearby. So small and simple, and then with just a slight turn of its head the jewel of the bird world appears. Suddenly the brilliance of the ruby hummingbird’s neck and crown glimmers in the light, becoming the light in the eyes of the beholder.

The History of the Ruby

There is no question that the hummingbird itself is precious to so many. What about the ruby as a gemstone? Precious gems have been collected and displayed by powerful individuals for centuries. The ruby was known to guide in making wise and noble decisions. Rubies were also thought to provide protection.

What about the spiritual nature of the ruby? This gemstone is very healing and inspirational for the heart.

The Healing Energy of the Ruby

Can gemstones help us make change, or heal the physical body, the soul, or the emotional side our lives? Focusing back on the heart the ruby is thought by some to promote healing of the heart disorders and blood glow. Nearby we have issues of the para-thyroid, and throat conditions.

Can we translate this physical-based healing into word that speak of the being more than the body? What about our words? We find more comfort and appreciation for words that come from the heart rather than the head. Words without purpose are meaningless, but the communication that comes from a heart-felt expression, words or no words, is what inspire and connect us.

The Ruby Throat Hummingbird

The ruby hummingbird, so small yet so commanding and powerful, parallels the sense of nobility that made the ruby so desirable to leaders throughout time. The ruby can inspire us to treasure ourselves and own our own power. Like the hummingbird we are capable of giving our best, speaking from the heart, and living our passion.

A Glimmer of Ruby Light – The Hummingbird

My own connection and appreciation of the hummingbird shines once again when I draw that intersecting line between my birthstone, the ruby, and the brilliant ruby color of the ruby hummingbird. The feathers itself are void of color, but the color appears like magic as the light of the sun reflect off those tiny hummingbird feathers.

As I move through my day my focus is on business and busy-ness like so many others. But in that day I make many choices, choosing to metaphorically turn one direction or the other. Will the choice be to turn in a way that disconnects from others or even self, or turn in a way that brings lights our world like the glimmering light of the ruby hummingbird? We are that light: our message from spirit does not come from any source that claims to know “the way”, but through our own subtle expression of our soul in our everyday lives.

February 20, 2008: Angie, my black lab, is begging me for an early walk. I’d been waking early, and working 5-6 hours straight so many days. Time for a walk and a little mental clearing. It is a beautiful sunny day, a little cold but at least its dry. Guess where I headed as soon as we reached the park? You’ve got it, the bench overlooking the valley. Within a minute of my arrive he was there, ready to share his message of the day. He sang of gifts, abundance, and the joy of it all, all the while swinging his head to-and-fro. He does not worry, or wonder, for he is a vessel who’s purpose is to receive whatever is sent his way. Message spoken, hummer departed.

I had carried my notebook with me that day, and decided to write the events of the past few days, if only to retain the messages shared with such determination. As soon as I started writing he reappeared, and chattered again his song of beauty and joy. Here, the gone again. Me, well I am human and slow, and it takes me a few minutes to record the whole story. I glance up at his tree again, but it stands empty. Oh, he moved to another tree to the left of me. He quietly attends, holding sacred space while I finish my notes.

It was so unusual seeing a hummingbird in this area, there was not any good source of nectar at this time of year, though I had several visiting my feeders at home, several miles away. No, that was an unusual event. Suddenly a flash of movement caught my eye, and there is was. He landed on the same branch, and chattered with a tinge of sarcasm, “you want proof”? As quickly as he came we was gone. There would be no visit without purpose.
