Not too far from the Rainbow Cave on the Sacred Mountain that is now in the place we call New Mexico, the Hummingbird Hoya lived with his beloved grandmother a very long time ago.
“I think I will go to Kiakima today and see what the clansmen are doing,” Hoya said to his grandmother one day.
Hoya was small, and because he was so small he wanted to be sure that people could see him. Hoya dressed himself in his most colorful hummingbird coat and he flew far away. Not too far into his journey he could see below him a lovely spring and so he decided to stop, taking off his beautifully feathered coat.
A part of the hummingbirds alluring quality is its speed and agility. Wings move at a pace that blurs in our vision. With our amazing technology we are now able to photograph the movements of the hummingbird and see it in slow motion.
Today for some reason I decided to turn on the tv, even though the sun is shining and the rain was temporarily at bay. Imagine my delight to turn to a documentary on my favorite topic, the hummingbird.
I treasure the times I am here in my home, or walking the trail and hearing the distinctive chatter of a hummingbird along the way. This season I have seen new comers, and welcome them with open arms, or in their case, open wings.
