After a fun-filled weekend I shared my goodbyes with a good friend as they prepared for a long drive home. “Have an safe drive home”, was the idea, but with humor we used words like “uneventful”. Safety is important, but why make it boring? With that we turn a blessing into an intention, and asked for a sighting or two of the raptor kind, whether it be an eagle, red tail hawk, or any other member of this impressive winged group.

Hawks, eagles, vultures, and falcons are in the raptor family. What exactly defines raptor? These birds are carnivorous, meaning they eat other animals. Vultures typically select dead animals, like road kill, while others go for live prey.

It was not so long ago that I stood outside my home and saw an eagle, something that is not an everyday event. The eagle moved quickly across the sky, never repeating any portion of its path like the hawks I see more often.

Raptors and Shamanism

Raptors have been honored in the native cultures and the world of shamanism since early times. The attributes of these amazing birds such as their strength, powerful vision, and speed as virtues that man can emulate. The most common attribute is the intensity of these birds.

What stands out most with the raptors of the world, the eagles, red tail hawks, falcons, and vultures is their awareness. All attention is given to the moment – now is the key to achieving any goal. Their focus is honored in expressions such as “an eagle eye”. We’ve all heard the expression, “a bird’s eye view”. It has been found that our human brain only registers a small portion of what our eyes see. How much of our observations are vision based, and how much is achieved by conscious focus?

There are 290 Falconiformes, or raptors, worldwide. This includes the nocturnal or night hunters, such as owls. In the U.S. there are regulations that restrict the ownership of raptor feathers or other body parts. These regulations are in place to protect the population of threatened species.

My friend followed up with me later that evening with an email to let me know that the prediction we made earlier was close, with the sighting of a hawk, a falcon, and two eagles. No vultures this trip, they were currently residing in the southern states for the winter. What a great way to add a little excitement to any drive, with an unexpected sighting of a raptor in action.

One afternoon there was quite a commotion in the yard. The dog was barking quite intensely at the back fence. It didn’t take long to find out why. There was a young raccoon climbing a tree on the other side of the fence.

Raccoons are amazing animals. As a totem representation of qualities we hold in our own life, they can be very interesting to observe.

The word raccoon comes from the word Arahkunem, which means “he scratches with the hands.”. In Norway the translation is “wash-bear”. The raccoon is a distant relative of the bear.

The most apparent characteristic of the raccoon is its mask. Is this a symbol of hiding, or a symbol of the stealth-like, night-based pursuits of the raccoon? This nocturnal animal is a master at hands-on manipulation.

Raccoons are smart as well, figuring out how to open containers and get what they want. Raccoons are known for cleaning their food.

When we look at these traits, and hold this mirror to ourselves, what do we see within our own world that carries raccoon qualities?

Life is very “hands on”, and the appearance of raccoon energy in your world can be a symbol for this trait. Patience can be woven into this tapestry as well, for the raccoon will persist to figure out the puzzles in life, in a very hands-on way, and will give their full attention to achieving their goals.

What about the nocturnal side of the raccoon, and that mask? It can be a symbol of hiding, or sneaking around, but it can also be a sign of privacy. Some of us like to work undisturbed by the world around us. Does this trait serve you, or restrict your ability to create the world you seek to create?

Every totem can show you strength as well as an area of life you seek to balance. The raccoon totem gives us a glimpse at several powerful abilities we share with this bandit of the night.

Author Estee Taschereau offers intuitive sessions for recognition of your own abilities and the steps you are taking toward self empowerment and success in life. The Healing Drum Retreat in the Pacific Northwest is an opportunity to learn more about totem animals, energy healing and get hands-on experience with native style crafting.

Today feels charged. I woke to a sunny day, not something that happens often in the Pacific Northwest. Enjoy it while it is here. As I transitioned into work, and writing, I positioned myself in a place that gives me the best of everything: big windows, sunlight streaming in, and full view of hummingbird feeders front and back.

The past few days certainly have had that early spring-like feel. Though its only in the 50′s it feels warm. A breeze blew the night before, with a light tropical feel to it. Could spring be just around the corner?

As I type I catch glimmers of movement out the corner of my eye. A hummingbird rests at the feeder, head darting back and forth before drinking any nectar. Suddenly another approaches, and its clear to see that an intruder had been discovered. Off they fly, the territory once more secured.

At the rate that this nectar is disappearing I would say that the population of hummingbirds in this area has increased. I appreciate these high-populations times, though keeping the feeders full is challenging on some days.

As I fall deeper into my thoughts, eyes on the screen, I pick up movement at the window. From the initial impression I thought a raptor was ready to knock on the door. No, it was the hummingbird for another belly full of nectar. His presence was huge! He turned to me, then quickly flew away. “I’m living”, was the message in his movement, “What better way to understand what life has to offer”.

With a shift in my schedule I decided to relocate for a week or so to the desert. The intent centered around letting go of the alluring draw of my surroundings as an excuse to put aside the writing of my storybook on the Mayan Tzolkin spiritual life cycle.

During my time in these dry desert days I was expecting my writings to focus on the vultures that are returning to the area. I’ll save that for another posting. Instead I would like to share the story of an evening that was both enlightening and enriching.

It was Saturday, and my friend had picked up tickets for a fund raising concert in Sisters, Oregon. The concert was great, featuring Hal Ketchum, and several students from Sisters High School performed as well. Everyone was amazing. During this concert I watched the flow of energy on the stage as well as the connectivity in the audience. I too felt a surge of emotions, creativity, and inspiration.

Many life experiences re-entered my consciousness that evening, and I took the opportunity to lift myself into my next step, something I had been speaking of in prior days but yet to achieve. I knew the next few days would be rich with ideas, release, and insights.

As all things must the concert ended, and we transitioned out to the car. The drive would be at least an hour. On the drive we conversed, and I shared with my friend some of my insights. Many of those insightful thoughts centered around the direction I would take in my work, and how strong a footprint I could leave in the sand.

In the final stretch of our drive we wound through a curving section of the back roads. Suddenly we spotted a form in the headlights. A cougar was crossing, leaping up the hillside and quickly disappearing. It’s presence was astounding, and its movement was graceful and certain, with each step within its own timing, with no concern given to the approaching vehicle.

As we continued the last few minutes of our drive, and I gave quiet thought to this encounter. Just on the wildlife perspective this was an amazing sighting. As an intuitive worker of the spirit realm I also turned to the shamanic meaning.

The cougar represents a state of solitude, and the art of following one’s own path. Many of us, when we focus on power, think of our career and business choices. But personal power, or the act of standing in one’s own footprints, is something that is carried into each waking moment. It is the depth of awareness, the silent observation, and the precise moment that follows that give the cougar such power.

“Walk your path”, shared the cougar spirit. “You cannot strike and recoil in the same movement, to do so would only bring havoc within yourself, and neither completion or separation will be achieved, and you will be lost in the mixed-up middle world of indecisiveness.”

Later that night, as I transitioned from the waking world into the dream state, I felt the presence of the cougar, and as I type this story I see the eyes upon my back.

Totem spirits or animal totems have offered us so much in our millenniums of learning. Many of us have forgotten how to learn on such a simple yet powerful way, turning away from the living representation of our world to a manufactured substitute. Find your totems, be it cougar, antelope or hummingbird. The qualities they possess are only a fraction of your own capabilities, but they serve you as you turn within and focus on your own power. You are the master of the art of living, not the your car, or your computer, or the money in your pocket.

This morning I prepared myself for this weekend’s event, the Healing Drum Retreat. I finished packing my notes, drums, and personal items, and placed them by the door. This morning passed quickly. With a million things I could do, and only a handful of should do, I opted for the lighter path.

“Lunch would be good”, I reminded myself, and decided to bring the remaining homemade soup along with me to share with Kaye, my healing drum retreat co-organizer. We will have a little work ahead of us preparing for tonight’s drum making class.

While my soup was heating I loaded my car. I’m a little more organized this trip, packing by room instead of a mish-mash stuffed in the back. As I brought bags and boxes to the car I heard the chirping of the chickadees and sparrows. “Feed us before you go”. That message was clearly stated. There was another familiar voice in the vicinity as well. I looked around but did not see her yet. Then as I locked the car (city girl that I am) and returned to the house I saw her, my little hummingbird friend that so often greets me at my office window.

“Say hello to everyone for me”, she shared, “Give them my love”. The love that radiates from a hummingbird is amazingly clear and nourishing to the soul. “Of course I will”, I returned. Then she continued on, sharing images and thoughts with me. “Let them know: Be gentle in your quest”, she offered, “The doorway opens so easily, you never have to force it”. I thought about those times I have stepped forward to glide quickly through a door only to find resistance, but the door could be so easily opened if only I stopped and pulled it toward me. Ah, a wonderful lesson came from this little bird in a simple note.

Sometimes we push away the things we don’t understand, or the parts of us that feel bigger than we perceive our spirit to be. There is grace in drawing closer those parts of us, embracing each moment of our lives. As we do so we have opportunity to find whatever is contained in that challenge. It could be a special part of us that is swirled within the chaos. We never want to throw away a part of us. What we seek is a clearer perspective and an accepting light. Be gentle with your heart, for your heart is your greatest ally.

Greetings to all, and welcome to Hummingbird Shaman. I have created this site under inspiration generated by a small group I have encountered. They are not small in number, but in size. Move too quickly and they will not be seen. Slow down and listen and they will speak.

Allow me to share some background on these ongoing encounters. There is a park where I often walk my dogs, or they walk me. It’s a mutual health maintenance venture. I rediscovered this park in 2007, and since have increased my visits from monthly, to weekly, and now almost daily, sometimes twice in the same day.

This park has a history, as most urban and suburban areas do. This had been a military site, a missile base, and many of the now grassy areas had once been large concrete slabs. Next door to this site is a landfill. When I first visited the park I chose to park next to the walkway that borders the landfill. You cannot tell this visually, but every time I walked by the land would cry out in agony. I spoke to the spirits, and the earth, and did what I could to bring comfort to this aching patch of our planet. As I often do I underestimated the power of my greeting, my recognition of nature, and the changes that can be inspired by the actions of one gentle soul.

Through this blog I honor one of our spirit guides, the hummingbird. My next post will describe my encounters. Take it as you may, what more can you do? For some this will be an adventure of the imagination. For others this will be recognition of spirit, of the re-awakening of our true nature. The earth has spoken, and awakened in me the Hummingbird Shaman that I am. I have accepted my role, taking part in the healing of our planet, and accept those who aid me in this journey, by form of human, animal, fowl, or spirit.
